Lego Instruction – Mosaic – Thelonious Monk

Thelonious Sphere Monk was an American jazz pianist and composer. He had a unique improvisational style and made numerous contributions to the standard jazz repertoire, including “‘Round Midnight”, “Blue Monk”, “Straight, No Chaser”, “Ruby, My Dear”, “In Walked Bud”, and “Well, You Needn’t”. Monk is the second-most-recorded jazz composer after Duke Ellington.

Monk’s compositions and improvisations feature dissonances and angular melodic twists and are consistent with his unorthodox approach to the piano, which combined a highly percussive attack with abrupt, dramatic use of switched key releases, silences, and hesitations.

Monk was renowned for a distinct look which included suits, hats, and sunglasses. He was also noted for an idiosyncratic habit during performances: while other musicians continued playing, Monk would stop, stand up, and dance for a few moments before returning to the piano.

Monk is one of five jazz musicians to have been featured on the cover of Time (the others being Louis Armstrong, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington and Wynton Marsalis).

塞倫尼斯・斯菲爾・孟克(Thelonious Sphere Monk) 是一名美国國爵士樂鋼琴家和作曲家。孟克擅長即興表演，同時也為爵士樂發展做出貢獻。孟克是史上作曲數排名第二的爵士樂作曲家，僅次於艾靈頓公爵(艾靈頓公爵作曲超過1000首，孟克作曲超過70首)。
